This is a 12 week internship opportunity which will start in early June.

Manchester City Council have an exciting new opportunity for a student/graduate to join their progressive and people focussed team. The council has set out a new strategy that focusses on the local community and helping to provide affordable housing to all. In this role you will be supporting this new initiative by completing research and creating reports that will inform the team about the housing market.

This new initiative has 4 main goals:

  1. Increase affordable housing supply & build more new homes for all residents.
  2. Work to end homelessness and ensure housing is affordable & accessible for all.
  3. Address inequalities & create neighbourhoods where people want to live.
  4. Address the sustainability & zero carbon challenges in new and existing housing.

They plan to build 36,000 new homes with around 3,000 being affordable and in the city centre.

During this internship the successful candidate will be undertaking high-quality research, including qualitative interviews with the for-profit housing sector. They will also be creating a final written report collating all of their findings throughout the internship. The successful candidate will receive experience delivering a project for a large local authority and have exposure to elements of the city’s housing sector.

Essential Skills

  • Degree or currently studying Economics, Politics, Humanities, or someone who is very interested in developing a career in public policy/ housing services.
  • Strong communication skills are essential
  • Very strong written communication skills, good understanding of target audiences
  • Ability to prioritise work well
  • Strong organisational skills
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office and associated software packages
