We have a ‘roll your sleeves up’ opportunity, which would suit an experienced Head of Buying/Buying Manager professional who enjoys both strategic input and detail simultaneously.

The role would suit someone who is excited by a business that is positioning itself apart from other retailers and further building on an already unique position in the market, whilst continuing to think and operate in an entrepreneurial way.

The buying team, whilst expanding, is intentionally small in size with relatively simple processes and subsequently this Buying Manager role requires a senior ‘leader/doer’ mindset that is capable of both leading and developing the incumbent team.

Role Purpose

Leading the buying function of the business, delivering the product strategy, range structure and new product development.

The Head of Buying/BM works closely with the broader leadership team to set the product strategy and is responsible for its implementation from the customer offer and range architecture through design and development to negotiating (in partnership with the sourcing team) and placing of new business. Focus is on the main category of cabinetry and accessories but also expected to support on sofa range architecture.

The role also drives organisational coordination and facilitates communications within the wider UK business (marketing, etc) and overseas offices. The individual will drive product development while also having a clear commercial understanding to ensure the product offer is commercially successful.

Responsibilities of the Buying Manager

  • Takes a holistic view of the entire customer offer to set strategy and direction with the buying team and exec. Establishes and develops the buying processes and routines to drive collaborative decision making and develop the corporate culture working closely with key stakeholders in marketing
  • All aspects of cabinet, upholstery and accessories range and product development adhering to Brand Platform DNA, whilst evolving/contemporising the product offer in a commercial way
  • Works in partnership with head of trading to review and determine appropriate range structure and retail pricing architecture
  • Work closely on the sofa proposition including supporting conceptual format development thinking
  • Holds periodic team meetings to address cross-country and cross-functional topics, such as design and development, costs and margin, product presentation, orders and delivery etc
  • Works closely with partners/vendors to ensure and drive commercial product offer identifying key third parties who can meaningfully contribute/support product development
  • Define, align, and agree targets with line manager and direct

This role would suit candidates with experience in the following areas: Buying, Purchasing, Buying Manager, Head of Buying.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Overall business performance – revenue and company Ebitda
  • Sales and margin performance (input and traded) for cabinet and accessories
  • Evolution of range architecture in line with agreed strategy
  • Critical path management / on time launch of new product

Essential Skills

  • Considerable working experience in buying, predominately furniture
  • Previous management and leadership experience
  • Thorough understanding of UK furniture market (useful, not essential)
  • Southeast Asia supply base understanding
