The University is looking to recruit a Graduate level energy / sustainability professional to help meet their energy and cost reduction objectives within the context of sustainability commitments such as carbon and water management. The volatility in energy price rises combined with a net zero target for scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions of 2035 has led the University to embark on an ambitious energy reduction programme to save money and carbon. You will play a significant role in delivering the University’s energy, carbon and water reduction aspirations and the University’s most ambitious Sustainability Sub Strategy to date.
The Opportunity
Working closely with the Head of Carbon and Energy Reduction, you will be supported to identify, develop and implement the University’s various energy and carbon reduction programmes. You will also help draft strategies and create and deliver a Carbon Management Plan that will achieve the University’s net zero carbon emission targets. You will have opportunities to develop and grow within the team, to progress with ‘on the job’ training and coaching, providing valuable insights into energy management in a large Higher Education environment. You will be supported and developed through a combination of professional training (internal and external) related to the role.
In addition to the role and it’s benefits you will be enrolled on to the Change Agents UK Sustainability Leadership Skills programme. You can benefit from networking with peers, 1:1 coaching to focus on your professional development and a series of workshops covering our three key areas of study; personal effectiveness and work skills, concepts and theories and ?engagement, influence and impact.
Key Responsibilities (Please see Job Description for full list)
- Support the reduction in energy, carbon and water usage across three campuses in line with the University’s Sustainability Sub Strategy, contributing to the University’s overall climate and ecological emergency work, to achieve net zero by 2035.
- Work closely with key internal stakeholders to develop the University’s built environment, in alignment with University Sustainability Sub Strategy.
- Provide advice, information, interpretation, and support on technical and professional challenges related to the Energy Performance of Buildings (England and Wales) Regulations 2012.
- Support the assessment, investigation, development and implementation of new initiatives, ideas and energy efficiency projects including energy, carbon and water reduction-related opportunities.
- Source and oversee external funding (i.e., Salix PSDS funds) including project repayments and general account matters for energy and carbon reduction projects.
- Work closely with colleagues leading on Sustainability Engagement to successfully drive behavioural change regarding energy and water usage.

- Experience of energy and water use audits that reduce energy and water consumption.
Desired Skills
- Qualification Level 5 (BTEC/NVQs) in Energy Management, Sustainability, Environment, Building Services, Mechanical, Electrical and Engineering.
- Professionally qualified and hold a corporate membership (Energy Institute- Associate or Student Membership or any other professional membership.
- Qualification Level 4 Non-Domestic Energy Assessor
- Experience of creating and implementing energy/water and carbon reduction strategies, policies and actions plans.
- Experience of collating, analysing and interpreting data and compiling reports.
- Experience of securing external funding opportunities
- Experience in managing a project team, capital programme of works and project budgets.
- Knowledge of energy markets and energy purchasing.
